Information
Benzoin / benzoin resin sometimes called gum or benzoin tears is a natural balsam, derived from the tree of the Styraceae family (benzoin styrax) native to Siam and Sumatra. Known for centuries, it is often used as incense, similarly to olibanum or myrrh. It is also widely used in medicine and cosmetics.
White exudation occurs naturally or through an incision in the trunk of a tree and is a pathological phenomenon for the tree. When it dries, the color turns yellow.
In perfumery, a variety of benzoin from Siam is used, which is less common and is an expensive ingredient. Benzoin absolute is obtained by extraction with volatile solvents.
What does benzoin smell like?
The smell is sweetish, warm, rich, balsamic, slightly reminiscent of vanilla with a hint of cinnamon, almonds, honey, cloves, slightly medicinal. In perfumes, it adds sensuality and depth.
