Ambergris or otherwise "Grey Amber" is a secretion from the digestive tract of sperm whales (species of whale). It is one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive, natural perfume ingredient due to its difficult availability (sperm whales are protected).
The smell of fresh ambergris is not pleasant, only properly seasoned raw material acquires a slightly salty, musky, slightly sweet smell with tobacco, leather, animal and marine accents. The smell may vary depending on the type of raw material. Its significant advantage is the way it affects other fragrance notes, because ambergris itself may not even be noticeable in perfumes.
